We Went From #180 to #1 in the App Store. The Biggest Lever Wasn't Ads.
· By Vaibhav Vijay · ASO, Apple Search Ads, Mobile Growth, Product Management, Experimentation
When we launched, our app was buried at #180 in its category.
Everyone assumed the answer was a bigger ad budget.
It wasn't.
What actually moved us:
→ We treated the store listing like a product. Screenshots, title and keywords got the same testing rigour as the app itself.
→ We used paid search to learn, not just to buy installs. The keywords that converted told us how users actually described their problem.
→ We fixed the first five minutes. Installs mean nothing if people leave before their first real action.
→ We shipped small improvements every week instead of waiting for one big launch.
The result: #1 in our category, organic installs roughly doubled, and acquisition costs came down.
The lesson I keep coming back to: growth is rarely one big bet. It's a hundred small, measured ones.

Run customer experience as a product: one roadmap and KPI framework, PRDs with success metrics agreed with engineering, and segmentation, lifecycle journeys and automated triggers built into the platform. On a customer experience platform I managed at OptiServ Consulting, that lifted CSAT 9% and repeat usage 15% and improved response time 27%.
